DESIGN TO COLLIDE: 5 LUMINARIES x 20 SLIDES x 20 SECONDS

Terence Riley, The Miami Rail & Special Guests Explore Social Connectivity Through Architecture, Art, Design, Race And Systems

On July 30, 2013, PechaKucha Miami presented Design to Collide – a special edition by Carl Hildebrand and Dejha Carrington, in collaboration with Miami Design District. Innovative design often creates solutions to problems and develops relationships that would not otherwise take shape. Five speakers showed 20 images – each for 20 seconds – exploring the notion of designed spaces where people are made to talk to each other, share spaces and to literally run into each other. Music by Mr. Brown; cocktails courtesy of Spirits of the Tsars vodka and Perrier; and bites by Soi Chinese and L.A. Sweets.

SPEAKERS: Introduction by Hunter Braithwaite, The Miami Rail – Editorially independent expansion of the Brooklyn Rail, providing critical coverage of art and culture

Thais Fontenell, Collective Inventory – Curator of the artist and design collective, representing wildly different design sensibilities that when brought together, create a cohesive, exciting and whimsical environment

Xavier Cortada, FIU Artist-in-Residence and Dr. Peter Markowitz, FIU Professor – Cortada and Dr. Markowitz share their art for the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider

Diana Iglesias and Kim Arredondo, Mixed in Miami – Leading the remix of the Hapa Project, a multiracial identity initiative created by artist Kip Fulbeck

Elsa Roberts, Pedestrian Safety Walk Project – Local activist engaged in community-building efforts, including transit and commuter advocacy

Terence Riley, Keenen Riley Architects – Internationally recognized leader in the design and development of cultural facilities and programs with great architectural significance
